In Palenque, we will see the tomb of Pakal and the “And it came to pass” Glyph and more. This is one of the most magnificent sites in all the area! You will be amazed by the view and natural beauties. Palenque is surrounded by the forest and mysticism; It is one of the most intriguing archaeological sites in the country, and it is considered as a world heritage site by the UNESCO.

Today we will visit 2 of the most artistically emblematic Mayan sites, Bonampak and Yaxchilan. First, we drive south all the way to the Usumacinta River, which divides Mexico and Guatemala, to catch a river raft which will take us upstream to a massive Mayan settlement named Yaxchilan. Our first building to explore will have us feeling like Indiana Jones, as we walk inside the Palace – a three-story governmental building with many rooms, chambers and dark tunnels which we are allowed to explore freely.
Next, we return to Escudo Jaguar, a modern Mayan community, where we will enjoy a meal and continue to our next site.
Bonampak is a smaller settlement located only 40 minutes away but is internationally recognized for its well-preserved murals painted inside a large Temple, which display and narrate the history of the region including the most important battle of the city. Here you will see how the Mayan depicted themselves as some light skinned and others dark-skinned, similar to how Nephites and Lamanites are described in the Book of Mormon.
We conclude our day back at our hotel by Palenque to get a good nights rest and prepare for the next day.
